Veteran's Quilts 2016
After our October Bee Meeting, I brought home some of the quilts that we had ready for delivery to the Veterans Hospital in Durham. I bundled them up and tied them with leftover bindings.
A few more were brought by members who were still working on their quilts. There are about 40 quilts and 20 pillowcases pictured here.
It was a beautiful morning and we were so happy to deliver all these quilts and pillowcases made by our quilting friends: Members of the Undercover Bee, Pine Tree Quilters and 3 quilts were donated by a lady Pat met in a quilt shop.
In all we gave 85 quilts and 20 pillowcases to the Hospice Unit of the Durham VA Hospital this year. Kudos to all the generous and caring quilters.

January 6th - Old Christmas!
I took some time this afternoon to cut some blue and tan blocks for a Veteran's Quilt Kit. It will be nice to have something ready to sew on at Bee meetings, etc.
It is a real simple star design with sashing that I can add as I make the blocks. I cut enough for 20 blocks that finish at 12" with sashing. It will make a quilt that is 51" X 63''.
.
My little hill of shirt fabrics is growing. John's sister brought me 14 shirts last week. I have most of them laundered and cut. She was in Pittsburgh so finding orange shirts was relatively easy!
Got in just a little more sewing on my version of the Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt. I am a little over half way done and I have another row sewn and ready to be pressed.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Christmas is put away at our house for the most part. John took out the tree today. When I was a child, my family usually took our tree down on Old Christmas! Of course we didn't put our tree up until the week before Christmas. January 6 was John's Mom's birthday so we always had a reason to celebrate on Old Christmas while she was living.
I have been sorting and filing 3 years worth of documents. I usually do this dreaded chore along with the other dreaded chore (TAXES) each year but I have been pretty slack the past two years. Time to bite the bullet! I just have 6 months more to go. Yea!
It has been something to occupy our minds as we have been waiting to hear the results of John's biopsy last week. Looks like we will have to wait a little longer. Hopefully no news is good news.

Veteran's Hospital Quilts
Today, Pat J. and I delivered 71 quilts to the Veteran's hospital in Durham, NC. We also took magazines and books.
The quilts were made by 3 different groups. The group I belong to, Undercover Bee, donated 31 quilts. Pat J. made about 10 quilts herself. She is very dedicated to this program.
The quilts are given to patients in the Hospice Unit and are passed on to the patient's family.
The director of the Program was very appreciative of the donation. She told us that she had heard from a couple of the Veteran's wives that they were glad to have the quilts for comfort, and slept with them after their loved one passed away.
These are the quilts I made for this year.
These are 3 more that I had pictures of.

After we dropped of the quilts, we celebrated by having lunch out and then a trip to an area quilt shop that just happened to be having a sale. How good is that?

Patriotic Plaid Quilted
Last week I took a day to layer quilts. I use one of the Sunday School rooms at church. I was able to do four medium sized ones there and a smaller one I did at home. This is a top I made in February. It will go to the Veteran's Hospital in Durham in late October.
It is quilted very simply with diagonal curvy lines and is 54x63". The backing is a flannel baseball print that I got at JoAnn's last year.

Another Patriotic Quilt - Exquisite Star
This is one of my favorite patterns to make. It is so simple and I love making these blocks when I just want to sew but don't have any plan. I call this mindless sewing.
I made the top at my Undercover Bee sew-in in August 2009, layered it last fall and quilted it on one of those cold January days. Our Bee usually dedicates our August meeting to making Veteran's Quilts. It is 45 x 63".
I will donate this to the Durham, NC Veteran's Hospital Hospice Unit in November.
I am donating it in honor of our friend, Holt Thornton, who served in the Army/Air Force during the Second World War. The plane he flew with was shot down twice. He is a proud veteran and a wonderful Christian man.

Plaid?
A day full of quilting! I sewed with some friends at a local quilt shop until 3PM, stopped at Joann's on the way home and then met with another quilt group in the evening for fun, food and show and tell.
I made several of these blocks today. I don't know the name of this block but it looks like a plaid to me. It is very easy to make using just 2" strips and 3 1/2" squares. I plan to make this a "Veteran quilt". 42 blocks should give me a 54 x 63" top.

Veteran's Quilts

These are the two quilts I donated to the Veteran's hospital in Durham in 2010.
The Evening Star has 12" blocks. My first attempt at quilting in an allover fan design. It is 45 x 60". The other I call Bonnie Hunter Star. The pattern is from her Shirttails book. I bought a copy of it when she came to speak at the Capital Quilters Guild in 2009. It is 60 x 60". Both quilts were finished in January 2010.
